Wine tourism in and around Montalcino is largely the responsibility of the local consortium of winemakers (Italy has many such wine consortia that jointly promote their wine in a region and monitor its quality).
In Montalcino, the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino represents the interests of its more than 200 associated wineries. These winemakers can all be found via the consortium's website. You can also find the (very strictly) rules of production for the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, the Rosso di Montalcino DOC and other wines that are produced. The main role here is played by the famous Sangiovese grape (called Brunello in Montalcino).
If you search for 'Strada del Vino Brunello di Montalcino', you will be disappointed. Unfortunately, there is no official wine route like many other great, well-known wines do. Tuscany, however, has plenty of alternatives. There are actually 18 wine routes you can take in the Tuscany wine region alone. All these wine routes can be found on the Strade del Vino di Toscana website.
The official wine route that includes Montalcino in its itinerary is the Strada del Vino Orcia.
The Orcia Wine Route organisation (Consorzio del Vino Orcia) was founded in 2003. Its headquarters is located in Castiglione d'Orcia, the heart of the Val d'Orcia. The
Thirteen municipalities are included. These are all located in the area south of Siena: the Val d'Orcia and the Crete Senesi. The towns annexed are Buonconvento, Castiglione d'Orcia, Pienza, Radicofani, San Giovanni d'Asso, San Quirico d'Orcia, Trequanda, Abbadia San Salvatore, Chianciano Terme, Montalcino, San Casciano dei Bagni, Sarteano and Torrita di Siena.

The characteristic rolling hills, rows of cypresses, castles and abbeys, churches and monasteries, villages and towns, farms and roads provide one of the many impressions that make Tuscany in particular such a popular destination with its many tourists.
Once you include the wonderful wines from this region, the choice is quickly made. Sangiovese ('sanguis jovis') grapes, once imported by the Etruscans from the Far East, are the basis of one of Italy's tastiest red wines.
