Italian Wine Travel Guide 2025 - Find Memorable Wine Tours and Winery Tastings in Italy
The Piedmont region is an Italian region in the northwest of Italy. The origin of the name (Pied-Mont is literally 'at the foot of the mountains') has to do with its location on the southern side of the Alps.
With beautiful Turin as its capital, the region is one of the world's most important winemaking regions. The well-known wine towns of Alba and Asti are the heart of the region's wine industry.
With the famous Barolo and Barbaresco as leaders of no less than 18 DOCG and 41 DOC wines. Although Piedmont is Italy's fifth largest wine region in terms of size, it is thus among the absolute top in terms of quality.
The Piedmont region has a large number of different wine regions. In total, there are 44 separate wine regions where grapes are being grown and wines are being made. An overview of these 44 wine regions within Piedmont are:

The so called Italian wine consortia (per wine or wine region) are responsible for the promotion and quality standards of their wines. This bundling of strengths gives them more power to precisely promote their wines -or their wine region- and bring them to the attention of potential customers or wine tourists.
The Piedmont region has no fewer than 17 of these Consorzia del Vino
These websites will give you a great starting point to plan your own wine trip, wine weekend or day through the vineyards with guided tours and winery tastings. You can also use the wine routes below. It will save you a lot of research.
What can be better than tasting the regional and local wines yourself along itineraries put together by the regional winemakers themselves. In Italy, the so-called 'Strada dei Vini...' are local wine trails along vineyards with the opportunity to taste the wines from the winemakers directly.
Below are the official wine routes in wine region Piedmont. As far as possible, links have been included to the English-language versions of the respective site.
Have a look at all the (there are more than 100...!) official Italian wine trails of the Strada dei Vini d'Italia.
In addition, you can find the necessary information on wine and wine trips on the
official tourism website of the Piedmont region.
The three main wine regions in Piedmont are the Langhe, the Roero and the Monferrato. The most famous of these is the Langhe, the area with Alba as the centre of the Barolo, Barbaresco and Dolcetto wines. The neighbouring Roero area lies to the North of Alba. This is where, for example, the Roero Arneis is produced. Monferrato, which also includes the wine towns of Acqui Terme and Ovada in addition to Asto, is the territory of the Asti Spumante, Moscato d'Asti, Barbera d'Asti and Barbera del Monferrato.
You may also find some smaller wine-making areas. Northwest of Turin and southwest of the great lakes, you can find the often smaller family-run wineries.
The great variation in grape varieties indicates that you will be able to discover many new wines during a wine trip to this region. It is estimated that there are around 200 autochthonous grape varieties in the region as their origin. Of the 50 or so grape varieties still used for viticulture, there are around 15 that are iconic and enjoyed all over the world.
The most famous blue grapes in Piedmont are Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. From the white grapes, Arneis, Favorita and Cortese are the most renowned grapes.
