The Italian wine region of Trentino - South Tyrol (Alto-Adige) is made up of two autonomous provinces. Trentino and South Tyrol, the later more commonly known in Italy as Alto-Adige).
Most Germans and Dutch tourists probably only know the area due to their trips to Italy. Those who take the Brenner Pass (A22) from Innsbruck to Verona will cross both regions.
It's a beautiful region, gorgeous landscapes on the South side of the imposing Alps. In the north (South Tyrol), viticulture is concentrated around both the Adige and Isarco rivers. In some cases located at altitudes of 1,000 metres. The views and steep mountain slopes are impressive, where winemakers struggle to access the grapes. Situated lower in Trentino, winegrowing is often on the more levelled terrain, and we can see grapevines tied up in the typical Trentino pergola style. To get the sun's maximum influence and to ventilate the grapes effectively, this pruning method has been used for centuries in this region on the plainer parts.
There are eight separate wine regions (out of a total of 358 Italian wine regions) within Trentino - South Tyrol. In a nutshell, they include:
In Italy, so called wine consortia take care of the promotion and quality standards of their wines for each wine or wine region. The collaborative and joined-up approach gives them more power to promote their wine, or their wine region, to you.
The Trentino - South Tyrol region has a large number of these Consorzia del Vino...
What would be better than tasting the regional and the local wines in person by following itineraries that have been composed by the regional winemakers and consortia themselves. In Italy, the so called 'Strada dei Vini...' are local wine trails along wineries with the possibility of tasting the wines at the wineries directly. These routes will introduce you to the countryside, the most beautiful landmarks, the most delicious spots to have a meal. But most of all, they are meant to introduce you to the regional and local wineries that will proudly present their wines to you. Wine tasting in the most beautiful way.
The overview of the official wine routes in Trentino-South Tyrol shows that there are only 2 official wine routes in this region.
Check out all (there are more than 100...!) official Italian wine routes from the Strade dei Vini d'Italia.

The differences in temperature between day and night give the grapes its particular taste. In this region, it is usually the smaller wine growers who provide their grapes to the cooperation. And although in the past they only delivered to nearby Germany and Austria, the wines are now more frequently shipped around the world. In recent years, its white wines in particular have been making a quality mark. They are amongst the best white wines from Italy.
Local grape varieties from which the wine is made include Schiava, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Vernatsch, Lagrein, Sylvaner and Blatterle. More well-known grape varieties are the Pinot Nero, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Trentino has a bigger area for cultivating wine, almost twice the size of South Tyrol. In addition to the familiar grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Risling and Pinot Bianco, you'll also find autochthonous grape varieties such as Marzemino, Teroldego, Rebo and Nosiola.
The Trentino-South Tyrol region lacks DOCG wines. There are a dozen DOC wines, of which the Trento DOC (sparkling wine) and the Teroldego Rotaliano are probably the most famous. The vineyards of Trentino-South Tyrol are producing the wines below (DOCG, DOC and IGT).
